Written during a stretch of heavy touring and life on the road, “Number” was inspired by the superficial connections that come with a fast-moving lifestyle. Tucker recalls, “I joked with a friend that I’d been collecting a lot of phone numbers, but had found nothing substantial. He laughed and said, ‘Sometimes getting the number is just where the relationship should end.’ I wrote the song that night on the bus.”
Recorded in a studio beneath the lights of the Hollywood sign, Tucker, DeCaro, and Kobylarz captured the dream – cooking, laughing, and creating music amid sweeping views of the city. The result is a rich, textured track where smoky vocals and deep-pocket rhythms stand out amid a backdrop of warm, rooty soul. It’s arguably Tucker’s grooviest release to date.
“Number” marks Tucker’s third single drop off his upcoming album, following “Fly Back Home” and “Bad Man” (feat. Sean the Shaman) in 2025. The new singles prelude a forthcoming full-length album arriving later this year, that promises to be Tucker’s most sonically diverse and cohesive work yet.
He says of the new music, “Every song on this project has been about growth. Musically, emotionally, spiritually… I’ve been chasing new sounds while staying rooted in who I am. ‘Number’ is that balance, it’s raw, but it has a groove.”
With “Number,” Ethan Tucker continues to carve his lane as one of modern soul’s most authentic and genre-defying voices where heart, grit, and groove meet.
